Learning materials on ICH

What is living heritage? What kinds of living heritage exist in Finland and around the world? How do traditions change over time? Learn more from our website opi.aineetonkulttuuriperinto.fi.

A learning materials website has been developed for schools, offering a wide range of resources and activities for exploring living heritage with learners of all ages. The website was developed by the Finnish Heritage Agency in cooperation with the Association for Cultural Heritage Education in Finland. It supports the implementation of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and is available in Finnish and Swedish.

Students can discover examples of living heritage in Finland and elsewhere through videos, images, and texts. The site includes adaptable activity sheets and image-based assignments that can be used across different subjects. Teachers can use the materials for a single interactive lesson or build an entire thematic week around living heritage.

The website offers a wealth of content. In addition to the 280 Finnish examples included in the Living Heritage Wiki Inventory, users can explore elements inscribed on UNESCO’s Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage and discover national inventories from different countries. These resources are also useful in language teaching. Furthermore, the Living Heritage YouTube channel provides more than one hundred presentations and talks on the subject.

The aim of the website is to encourage children and young people to reflect on their own living heritage. Contributions by children and young people are also welcomed for the Living Heritage Wiki Inventory. All schools in Finland are invited to take part and help make the country's diverse living heritage more visible.
